Project Brief
This report will explore the possibility to utilize 3D digital technology in the fashion supply chain. Research within these fields will reveal diverse perspectives for critical analysis and evaluation, and the validity of the thesis question.
Fashion Design for Zepeto Avator
Fashion is my hobby and 3D is my professional field of study. I thought that by combining both, I could conduct in-depth research alongside my own interests.
At the first I made brainstorming from my knowledge which I had before I start research. Then I decided title. After that, I started initial research from website and though aim and objectives.
On the other hand, I got inspiration from this website about How 3D changed fashion workflow. For a long time, the workflow in the apparel industry has been a one-way flow of 'planning', 'production', 'distribution' and 'sales'. However, Mitsubishi fashion corporation, have talked recently about if 3DCG data can be used to visualize and share product images from the development stage, it will be possible to build a workflow that can proceed from 'planning' to 'sales' simultaneously. (Mitsubishi,2022) I focused on this topic for my base thinking.
Theme for Collection
The theme of the collection is gender neutral, which is also the project theme of the second semester of the third year, advocating the elimination of inequalities in SDGs 10 and 7. The oversized combination of denim and leather and the black, grey and blue tones create a design that is neither feminine nor masculine.
What can I learn?
3D modelling skills
This is a good opportunity to use your fashion hobby to develop my 3D skills. I can try your hand at everything from basic shaping to detailed creasing.
3D x Fashion
Spent a year of my third year learning about fashion and digital technology through my dissertation, developing my own 3D fashion design skills here to demonstrate how 3D can be used in the fashion industry.
3D work for animation
Making animations is not my area of expertise, but this 3D model will be animated within the Zepeto world, and I tried to create a detailed 3D design that could be used in the animation.
Final work at University
The project will represent the culmination of his own university studies. I focused on the visuals so that it could stand as a portfolio.
How to design....
Theme and textures
As first step, I decide the theme, texture and colours. The theme of this collection is gender neutral fashion and grey x denim.
Sketch
I draw the sketch of the design whoch are front view, side view. Basic line draw makes me easy to 3D model.
3D Modelling
For the second step, I do 3D modelling. I try to make the product with small meshes of flexible and textured fabric lines. I put my sketch and base avatar mesh in blender then follow the size and shape.
Mapping
Next step is mapping. In terms of texture, I need to send the texture map to Zepeto separately and apply unity. So I make maps like a patterning of clothes and apply the fabric pictures for the mapping instead shading.
Rigging x Animation
As last step before upload to Zepeto, I do rigging for the avatar animation. Base avatar mesh already has a skeleton, so I manage the weights and subdivide the faces by following the skeleton. Then I apply for unity and check animation.
Collections
The collection was completed with these five designs.
The jeans texture was completed by searching how to make jeans shading on Youtube. The hoodies were made from a basic framework in CLO, transferred to a blender and altered to avatar size.
This is based on the basic CLO jacket template, modified to avatar size and decorated.
This is my first piece of work. Everything was produced in a blender. It took me a long time to set the weight settings to create the creases on the arms.
Jumpers were made by editing previously used hoodie models. The challenge was to adjust the mapping so that a clean stripe pattern is visible on completion. It was completed after a number of redos.
This is the basic CLO template edited into the trendy jogger trouser shape, with added pockets, creases and sizing. This was a struggle to create natural clothing-like lines.
Future Steps......
Although my career path after graduation will not be fashion-related, this 3D fashion design as a hobby will one day give me the opportunity to be involved in my favourite fashion as a person on the 3D side. I would like to raise the level of my designing to a higher level so that I can earn money on the side.
